Digg This jeff

Here is the audio of the Brian Cashman and Hank Steinbrenner conference call. It’s mostly Cashman and apparently his contract involves him getting paid by the word.

It’s a long file, I’ll warn you. But if you’re interested in the machinations of the Yankees, it’s interesting:

The plot was much better the second time.

  2. Count of Montefusco says:

    Pete:

Why do you insist on continuing to call this man LITTLE Stein? I don’t get it. It just strikes me a kind of a petty, trifling thing coming from you.

I mean, most of us have fathers with the same last name…are you “Little Abe”?

If you are really hellbent on diminishing the guy, why don’t you use some epithet that is more descriptive than it is “schoolyard”?

  3. Thomas says:

Pete was that you in the NoMas forum? Just say yes or no or if you have no idea what I’m talking about I’ll know it wasn’t you.

  4. Guys, George has been referred to as “Big Stein” for a long time. Calling his son “Little Stein” is hardly a blatant attempt at disrespecting or diminishing the guy. Relax.

  5. Heh. I call ‘em Steinnie and Steinnettes.

Guess that makes me immature. Oops.

  6. EY says:

    LOL chill guys.

  7. ThatWasMe says:

Why don’t guys lighten up? A stab at humor, a harmless comment, go kick your dog, leave Pete alone.

  8. tony fernandez says:

name calling is a waste and takes Pete’s credibility down a notch. Do you think vin scully would make up his own nick names?
    Berman would…but he’s an idiot.

  9. ThatWasMe says:

Really? One whole notch? And just how big is a notch?

  10. tony fernandez says:

a little bigger than a peg

  11. Dave says:

I havent commented on arod opting out yet because i was too pissed and mortified to do so. I mean not even listening to any offers by the yanks and then, opting out and telling the media it was because of the uncertain futures of pettitte, rivera and posada. Are you kidding me? He flat out lied to the entire state of NY as well as the fans and im sure the players. To call new york comfortable and to say he cant imagine playing any where else a week before opting out is just lies. If he knew he was opting out which he obviously did, why constantly lie to us? Why pretend like he was going to stay? And to not even listen to the yanks extension offers or return phone calls proves he does not want to be a yankee and certainly never fealt comfortable but it also shows how he has no respect for the yankees pinstripes and as importantly, no respect for the game of baseball at all. Arod shouldnt just be bood in NY, he should be mugged and his jaw should be broken. Better yet – I hope he suffers a career ending injury his first day of spring training next yr and his house burns down (his biggest house.) How dare he think he is bigger than the game? The ego on this piece of $%#@. And for baseball to blame it on boras, what bout arod? Good riddance! I hope u never have to suffer the agony of coming back to NY you mother %$&*^%. I hope you are praying you get the biggest offer from an NL team. In fact, you should take a paycut to go to an NL team and avoid ever coming back to NY. Cuz you will be lucky if you only hear a roar of boos throughout the game and in the streets. This guy doesnt even deserve to have the kind of talent he has – with no appreciation whatsoever he doesnt even deserve to play the game. Go cry to your mommy you %$&%.

  12. ThatWasMe says:

I can tell you guys didn’t grow up in a big family, name calling ruled the day.

  13. Dave says:

I cant believe i ever defended this @$$. I take back every nice word i ever said about him. Go rot in hell!

  14. Pete is merely expressing his first amendment rights. I have no problem with that. He’s not spewing hateful or derogatory remarks.

  15. willis says:

    NY Post breaking news:
October 30, 2007—With Grady Little out of the way in , Joe Torre is the Dodgers’ first choice to take over the club. According to sources, Torre has agreed in principle to a three-year deal worth $14.5 million and could be introduced Thursday, the same day the Yankees are holding a press conference to welcome Joe Girardi, Torre’s successor, at Yankee Stadium.

    poor Proctor

  16. You guys can’t be that humorless. In the wildly popular TV show “Seinfeld”, the George Steinbrenner character was called “Big Stein.”

If an innocent pop-culture reference is too sensitive for you, you need to find another blog.

Beyond that, have you seen Hank Steinbrenner? He looks just like his father.

Honestly, if you’re that sensitive I don’t know what to tell you. I’m going to write the way I write. Sorry.

  17. J-Dawg says:

My goodness, that was just an innocent comment by Pete. He calls him Little Stein from time to time. No big deal at all. Relax.

  18. This (Next) Year says:

Surprised he didn’t find the average salary of under 5m insulting. I guess JT didn’t think it was insulting to Little to take his job. Really tired of the St. Joe act.

  19. ThatWasMe says:

Tell them Pete, can you imagine doing stand-up in front of these guys? Bunch of stiffs. Pete, you just stepped up a notch in my eyes.

  20. Strummerson says:

Anyone know about this rumor that A-ROD is going to the Lakers and Kobe was seen taking grounders at 3rd in Tampa?

  21. ThatWasMe says:

No incentives, he needs no inspiration.

  22. As much as I love Joe T, and I do, we should probably be looking forward now, not back…no?

  23. ThatWasMe says:

    Avanti

  24. pat says:

    Dave
take a few more days and get back to us again.

  25. This (Next) Year says:

Rebecca, I could not agree with you more. But compare the way Donnie left with JT. No comparison. IMO, JT took a step down with the whole insult/dignity thing. Still appreciate everything he did, especially in the first half of his career here when he managed more with a sense of urgency (sitting Tino for Fielder, e.g.), but his holier than thou/treat me like the icon I am is really pretty annoying. At least to me.

  26. JeffG says:

Pete – keep doing exactly what you do, and writing exactly how you write. It’s why I come here multiple times a day.

If people don’t like it, why are they here? Someone holding a gun to their heads?

  27. Joe from Long Island says:

Anyone see the NBC-TV show “Friday Night Lights”? The episode last Friday showed a plot where a high school football coach was fired, so that another coach could get the job. The fired coach then goes to the new coach’s house and tells him, face-to-face, “you’re not the only one with a family and a career!”

  28. Joe from Long Island says:

Re: my post above – I wonder if that sort of thing happens in the pros, or if the pro coaches are in a dog-eat-dog world?

  29. This (Next) Year says:

St. Joe went to Little’s house and blessed him.

  30. Who's at 3B? says:

Enough with the manager talk, let’s talk the next 3B for the Yankees, or at least the 2008 Yankees 3B.

What do you think of Kevin Kouzmanoff from San Diego?
    He’s a righthanded hitter who posted .275 BA (133 for 484), .329 OBP, .457 SLG, .786 OPS, 18 HR, 74 RBI, 57 R, 1 SB (0 CS), 31 doubles, 2 triples, 32 BB, 94 SO in his first full season (145 G) for only $380,800 (the rookie minimum). He’s 26 and turns 27 next July 25th -not a kid, but still young.

The Padres have another 3B in their farm system named Chase Headley who I’ve read could take over 3B from Kouzmanoff. Anyone have any info on him? All I know about him is he had a brief cup of coffee with the Padres this year (4 for 18 in 8 games). Is he better than Kouzmanoff? Which one would you want if S.D. said take your pick?

  31. Mehdi hates Randy LEvine says:

Curt Schilling taken from and ESPN article “It wasn’t unexpected,” Schilling said. “Between them and the Yankees making sure we were updated every 15 minutes about when they were actually going to name their manager, I didn’t give a crap. Bottom line was they’re playing golf and making organizational decisions and we’re still playing games.”

Classless scum if there ever was one. He deserves to be with the Red Sox and they deserve him. Absolute scum of the earth.

  32. BBFan says:

    God help Dodgers.
Even if they make it to the post season, they will get kicked out in the first round.

Serioulsy, though I sincerely believe Torre is a great individual, he is going to make a fool of himself. He will be no different from Casey Stengel after he left Yankees. I feel sad that it is going to tarnish his accomplishments with the Yankees, probably proving that Yankees made Joe Torre what he was (before joining Dodgers!).

  33. J-Dawg says:

15 minutes- Curt can’t go 15 minutes without mentioning the Yankees. Talk about somebody who is obsessed.

  34. This (Next) Year says:

Agree BBFan. No intent to dump on JT. Just a bit annoyed at the act. But you are right—it is more sad.

  35. Dee says:

I love how when asked about Donnie and the alledged promise from Big Stein, Hank said “I’m not gonna comment” at least twice but continued to comment for several minutes. I’m looking forward to more comments from Hank for years to come, he makes me LOL everytime.

  36. Drex says:

is it just my pc or does the audio drop out around the 34 minute mark?

  37. lv says:

    hihihihihihihihiihihihihihih
